$250 Sports Authority Gift Card Giveaway! How Do YOU Instill Fitness & Healthy Living in Your Kids?

**CONTEST NOW CLOSED!!**

When I started this blog, I’d just had my first daughter and was embarking on a marathon training program.

Fast forward seven years and another daughter later, and now I have children that are school aged (how did THAT happen?!) and my main goal is no longer to run 26.2 BUT to ensure as I am continuing to be active and healthy my kids are doing the same.

With childhood obesity and diabetes skyrocketing in America, it’s important that we, as parents, really promote activity and healthy lifestyles for our children.

We can do this numerous ways: through after school sports, like soccer and dance; through family bike rides and hikes and swims; through creating delicious and healthy meals in our homes; through talking to our children about the importance of eating well, skipping sodas and taking an active part in our health.

I’ve been very fortunate to be chosen by Henkel Helps as a mom who works to promote healthy families, and guess what? They generously gave me a $250 Sports Authority card to give away to one lucky family that’s working hard to live a healthy, active life!

The winner could be you!

As for me . . .

My oldest daughter and I are going to run a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning! I’ll do the 5K and then she and I will do the one mile fun run.

Amanda Running

To get ready, we began a ‘training’ program last week that included a half mile run. She loved it! I let her choose the music we ran to (Lady Gaga was top of her list!) and then we put on our running clothes and jogged half a mile. After we stretched, and she said to me she loved it, not only the running part and the blasting of Lady Gaga from my phone, but, she said,

I loved spending time with you running.

And that is one of the best benefits of staying active as a family – you get to do something that is healthy for you while spending quality time with your kids.

Good luck on the giveaway!

In the meantime . . . what did you do this weekend to stay fit?

I tested out a pilates video I bought a while ago. Loved it! Core still sore! I also did a nice 4 mile run. Longest I’ve gone in a few months, and it felt great. The cooler weather makes working out outside perfect, so if you haven’t been for a bike ride/walk/jog, get out and do it!

Tuesday’s Triumphs! What are Your Fitness Accomplishments for the Week? (and Win a fitbit Wireless Activity Tracker!)

**GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED!**

Dear Readers,

Today’s run was fantastic.

It’s not that I PRed. I’m building back up, and I had to walk a little. Six months ago, this would have made me angry.

It’s not that I went on an exciting route. My daughter was up last night with a 103 fever, so I got little sleep and wanted to hang close to home in case she woke while I was out running. I rose early after interrupted sleep and ran a .5 mile loop over and over and over again. 7 times. And after each loop around I ran back to the house to make sure daddy hadn’t flipped on the porch light, which would have been my signal she’d woken and needed me.

It’s not that I felt  I was pushing myself to great extremes. I wasn’t trying to go faster or farther, though I would love to do both things. I was doing a shorter run. Slower run.

But the point is,

I was doing it.

This may not seem like a big “Woo hoo!” to some, but parents reading this will nod their heads and say, ‘Uh huh! I get it!’

Because fitting in fitness when you have little lives to take care of can be difficult at best.

This weekend I read a few race reports from moms and dads who trained and ran Chicago.

First of all, congrats to all of you! WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!

It has been several years since I ran my last marathon, but I clearly recall the difficulty of training and planning while taking care of two children, who at that point were quite young.

One theme reoccurred in many race reports I read:

The runner hadn’t done as well as (s)he wanted. Didn’t PR. Had to walk. Finished slower than thought.

Then I had a conversation with another mother who discussed her frustration with a stop and go fitness routine. She wasn’t going as far or as fast as she wanted. She didn’t squeeze in three pilates sessions each week between kids going to bed and her dropping into her own. She hoped to run a 5K next month but has been unable to faithfully run three times each week in order to train, and has only run two times a week and for not as far as she wanted.

Here’s the thing, though:

The marathoners and the mom got out there and ran. They did what they could do to fit in some exercise.

If we spend all of our time negating our accomplishments, we won’t go continue to try.

If we say, “I should have gone farther,” or, “I didn’t go as fast as I wanted,” we will lose hope and, eventually, interest.

If we aren’t proud of what we are doing when it comes to fitness and exercise, our kids will see this; and then they, too, will stop trying.

Here’s one thing I can guarantee you:

Exercise programs will fail if you don’t believe in yourself!

So in order to continue keeping on, you must start to appreciate the efforts you put into exercise and fitness each week.

Here’s your first chance, and it comes with an AMAZING prize, all thanks to the Henkel Helps Get Kids Fit program! In order to get your kids active and healthy, they must see you, too, making the effort.

So here’s what I’m doing: I’m implementing Tuesday’s Triumphs, and my question to you each Tuesday will be this:

What exercise and/or fitness accomplishment(s) did you meet this week?

Did you start a new fitness program?

Did you pass on sugar for the week?

Did you get up early on the days you were supposed to just to fit in some exercise?

Did you get your kids to join you for a bike ride after school?

Did you do a run or walk while your child attended soccer practice? Squeeze in a run in the early morning or late evening hours?

Monday Round Up: Running, Ghost Gardens, Family Fitness and a BIG Giveaway!

I figured since my thoughts are scattered about like confetti at a party I’d do a round up post rather than trying to narrow it all down into one.

Running
I’m happy to say I was able to do most of a three mile run actually running and not walking. Doesn’t sound so exciting to those friends of mine running 13.1 but since I was unable to run for quite a few weeks, this was a huge success! Tested out my new Sauconys (LOVE!). Hoping to compete in a 5K this month (Funny to think about that after so many half marathons, but I AM excited to try to race again, and maybe the lower distances will be better for me right now.) I also maintained daily yoga for the past week. Considering all that has been going on – youngest home for 5 days with a 104 fever, daddy coming home, and other of life’s activities – I was pretty happy to stay on schedule.

Ghost Gardens
The girls and I spent this weekend at home doing some initial preparations for our annual Halloween bash. These Ghost Gardens are super simple and cheap enough you could make them for a classroom party. Here’s the end result:

This is a great project we do each Halloween for the kids who come to our Halloween party. Here’s what you need to get started, and I got most of these items from the Dollar Tree so the project wasn’t expensive at all:

Ghost Garden Craft Project Party Favor

Lollipops (those with a larger ‘pop’ work a little better)
Container in which to place the pops (got mine at the Dollar Tree!)
Square used for holding plastic flowers in place (cut to fit the container you use – also found at Dollar Tree)
White tissue paper
Halloween ribbon
Markers or scrapbooking pen for drawing faces
Confetti

To Make:
Cut squares of tissue paper to fit the lollipop. I double mine so you can’t see the lollipop underneath.

Ghost Gardens

Fit around the lollipop.

Act like a ghost!

Ghost Gardens

Tie ribbon around ‘neck’ of ghost.

Have kids draw on the faces.

Cut the flower foam to fit the container.

Stick the lollipops into the foam.

ghost gardens

Halloween party favor craft for kids Halloween party.

Add confetti to fill the bottom and hide the foam.

Enjoy!

Now, for the BIG news! Thanks to the Henkel program Get Kids Fit!, I have an AWESOME list of gifts to give away for families interested in getting fit TOGETHER. This means parents/guardians and kids getting out of the house and getting fit. It requires a bit of a commitment, but, hey, isn’t your health – and especially the health of your kids – worth it?!

The grand prize:

A $250 Sports Authority gift card!

Details coming soon! In the meantime, tell me your biggest challenge to exercise as a family.

Is it not enough time? Crazy schedules? Weather? Location? Something else entirely? I’ll address some of these as we get started on our giveaway, but I’d like to address YOUR biggest challenge, so send them in!

And the Winner of the New Balance with COOLMAX (R) Socks Is . . .

So you thought I’d break right into it?

Sorry to spoil your fun!

First I need to know something: How do you choose what race you are going to do and which you will pass on?

Right now I have several on my fictional athletic plate that I’d like to attempt.

The first, and one of the closest, is the Savannah Century Ride. A 31 mile bike ride through rural Georgia in September.

The second, a sprint tri, but it is 120 miles away, which is a bit too far for me to go in the morning before a race.

The third, a 5K mud run about an hour away, same weekend as the bike.

The fourth, another sprint tri, which just so happens to be just one week before an Olympic distance tri; the sprint is in my hometown and the Olympic is about an hour away.

The problem?

Too many races!

This is the time of the year we race down here in the south, when the heat has subsided some and cooler weather makes it bearable to train outdoors.

At this point I’m thinking:

Savannah Century Ride
10K on September 24, because it is kind of in my backyard, and
Either the Sprint or Olympic tri in Jacksonville on October 16

November 5 is my big one, the Savannah R&R Marathon.

So today’s question to you: How do you choose your race?

Do you go for:

  1. Cost
  2. Proximity
  3. Location
  4. Date

For instance, would you choose a race solely based on its location (ie: you want to go to Hawaii so you choose a marathon there?)

Or would cost really determine what you did: one race is much cheaper than the other, so you choose the former.

For me, all of these come into play, but cost and date are the most important. With two young children it’s tough to commit to anything too far into the future, which is why I never sign up for anything early on (one exception: the Savannah marathon, because I’ve always wanted to do an R&R marathon).

What’s the most important factor in swaying which races you participate in?

Okay, okay, now, the winner of the glorious week’s worth of New Balance socks is . . .

Melissa from For the Love of Free! Congratulations, Melissa!

Here’s Random.org’s choice!

Giveaway! A Week’s Worth (Six Pairs!) of New Balance with COOLMAX (R) Running/Cycling/Walking Socks

I was recently lucky enough to receive a pair of New Balance socks with COOLMAX (R) Fabric Technology to review.

First, let me say this: A good pair of running (or cycling or walking or bowling or, well, you get the picture!) socks can really make a difference when you head outside.

Socks that bunch up cause blisters. Too-thin socks don’t offer any comfort, and too-thick socks can make your shoes too tight, leading to black nails, numb toes, and blisters. And wearing a pair of thick cotton socks in the dead of summer leaves your feet open for all kinds of issues, since you really want something that will wick the moisture away (just as good running shirts and shorts will do) and keep you dry.

I use good socks for runs and rides, and these are perfect. Cushy but not too thick, they offered softness without causing my shoes to fit too tightly. The Cool Max technology kept my feet dry, which makes them perfect for running in the heat and humidity; this is desperately needed now, considering the temp has topped over 102 degrees this week! I also like the fit. My old socks slump too low on my feet; these fit well without sliding.

And the best news of all?

New Balance has graciously offered to give one lucky Mamamarathoner reader a week’s supply of socks! That’s six pairs of the New Balance with COOLMAX (R), because as you all know, I believe in rest days!

(If you can’t wait for the giveaway and need to order some now, New Balance socks with COOLMAX (R) Fabric Technology are available at Academy Sports and Outdoors retail locations. Check out the site www.academy.com for locations near you!)

How do you win? It’s easy!
